Dolls of porcelain, Enchanted Dolls by Marina Bychkova

For many women, breast cancer can be one of the darker fears we are raised with. This is especially true in a society that glamorizes, fetishizes, and focuses on women's breasts so much. From the old masters to the tackiest video game, young women are taught that breasts are a large part of what makes us beautiful. However, our bodies can turn on us, we can develop breast cancer, and we can lose these lovely parts of ourselves. The horror of this mutilation is only compounded by how the world looks at us as women, and this fear is what Marina's newest Enchanted Doll faces head on.

Pinokkio

EXCLUSIVE: Guillermo del Toro, The Jim Henson Company and Pathe are ready to go on Pinocchio, a 3D stop motion animated adaptation of the Carlo Collodi fairy tale that will be edgier than the 1940 animated Disney classic. Gris Grimly will co-direct with Mark Gustafson, and production will begin later this year. Grimly illustrated a 2002 book of Collodi’s tale that formed the basis for a project that is years in the making.

Al in 2008 werd bekend dat Guillermo Del Toro, de man met de voorliefde voor donkere fantasie, samen met de Jim Henson Company ging werken aan een duistere verfilming van Pinokkio, het sprookje bedacht door Carlo Collodi in 1883.
Dat het lang stil bleef rond het project verbaasde niemand, Del Toro is misschien wel een duizendpoot, dan nog komt hij handen te kort om aan al zijn projecten te werken. Het project kreeg een kleine boost; de Jim Henson Company en Guillermo Del Toro maakten bekend de samenwerking te zijn aangegaan met het Franse Pathé en dat de productie dit jaar start.
Een andere opvallende naam onder de productie is die van Nick Cave, hij zal de muziek voor dit donkere sprookje schrijven.
In de loop van dit jaar wordt er gestart met de productie door het team dat ook ervaring heeft bij de films Fantastic Mr. Fox en Corpse Bride. Wanneer we Pinokkio in de bioscoop zullen zien is niet bekend gemaakt door Guillermo Del Toro, de Jim Henson Company en Pathé.

Eigenlijk vind ik Pinokkio een vervelend verhaal. Aangezien ik nu zelf een houten pop aan het maken ben vond ik dat ik toch iets moest opzoeken over Pinokkio. Dit lijkt me wel een interessante versie van het verhaal worden. Ik ben heel benieuwd!

Kokeshi dolls

Kokeshi zijn traditionele Japanse houten poppen. Ze zijn handgemaakt, hebben een eenvoudige romp en een groot hoofd. Ze hebben geen handen en benen.Meestal krijgen ze van de maker ook een boodschap mee om degene die ze koopt geluk te brengen.




Traditionele Kokeshi
Deze poppen, ook wel Dento genoemd, werden oorspronkelijk in het Noorden van Japan door houtsnijwerkers gemaakt. Ze dienden als speelgoed voor hun kinderen of werden verkocht aan toeristen die een bezoek brachten aan de hete bronnen in de regio.

De vorm van de romp van deze poppen is cylindrisch en hun hoofden zijn rond. De beschilderingen erop zijn kenmerkend voor de regio waar ze gemaakt werden. De bloemstukken en lineaire patronen op hun kimonos zijn ontwikkeld en doorgegeven door generaties van kokeshi kunstenaars uit die bepaalde regio. Op grond hiervan zijn ze ingedeeld in elf categorieën te weten: Tsuchiyu, Togatta, Yajiro, Naruko, Sakunami, Yamagata, Kijiyama, Nanbu, Tsugaru, Zao-takayu, en Hijioro. De meest bekende poppen zijn de Naruko, oorspronkelijk gemaakt in Miyagi. De belangrijkste straat van het Naruko Hot Spring resort staat bekend als Kokeshi Street en daar zijn veel winkels die worden geëxploiteerd door de Kokeshi kunstenaars.

Wayang poppen

De pop verbeeldt de figuur Pregiwa uit het wayang golek spel.

Wayang golek poppen worden door mannen gemaakt en beschilderd. De vrouwen zorgen voor de kleding van de poppen. De pop bestaat uit drie delen: een hoofd met een hals, een korte romp en een lange houten of bamboe pen. Deze loopt als een spil door de romp en wordt stevig in de hals vastgeprikt. De poppen dragen altijd een lange rok zodat de pen wordt bedekt. Met de pen manipuleert de poppenspeler, dalang, de pop. Wayang golek wordt zowel overdag als 's nachts vertoond onder begeleiding van gamelan muziek.

Pop van Ver is in eerste instantie gestart met deze webwinkel om adoptie kinderen een pop te kunnen aanbieden waarin ze zichzelf kunnen herkenen.

Mede door onze multi-culturele samenleving en de grote vraag naar gekleurde speelpoppen voor bijvoorbeeld peuterspeelzalen, dagverblijven etc. is Pop van Ver in de loop van de jaren flink uitgebreid.

All kinds of colored dolls. Some of them I really like. The site is called : doll from far away. They started this website for adopted children so they could have a doll to identify with. But now they sell all kinds of dolls because of our multicolored society.

Dutch doll

Een heel bekende houten pop is de Dutch doll. Het zijn vrij eenvoudige houten popjes. De ledematen scharnieren op houten pennetjes, kop en romp zijn uit een stuk. Het is echter geen Hollandse pop, zoals de naam doet vermoeden. Dutch is waarschijnlijk een verbastering van het woord deutsch. Zo bestaan er ook Dutch clocks die in het Zwarte Woud zijn gemaakt. De Dutch dolls, zoals ze ook nu nog onder verzamelaars bekend zijn, werden in grote getale gemaakt vanaf het einde van de achttiende tot in het midden van de twintigste eeuw. Nederlandse kooplieden kochten via tussen­handelaren in het Grödner Tal (Zuid-Tirol) de poppen bij duizenden en verscheepten ze vanuit de Nederlandse zeehavens naar Engeland en Amerika. Ook daardoor zou de naam Dutch doll ontstaan kunnen zijn.

Marilyn Neuhart dolls

When Ray Eames sent one of Marilyn Neuhart’s Mexican cotton dolls to Alexander Girard in 1959, Mrs. Eames probably didn’t predict the decades-long working relationship that would result. The organic quaintness of the Neuhart dolls mixed perfectly with Girard’s folk art sensibilities, making them the impetus of a successful creative partnership.

The newly issued House Industries dolls are made with Mexican cotton from the same family-owned mill that Neuhart used for her originals.

Anna Sui pulled inspiration from the textile designer, shopkeeper, and New York Mexican restaurant pioneer Alexander Girard and a doll-maker friend Marilyn Neuhart to inspire her folkloric modern collection. “Their work was very colorful, optimistic, and happy, which is what I’m pushing these days,” Anna said.

Alexander Girard

Alongside Charles and Ray Eames as well as George Nelson, Alexander Girard was one of the decisive figures in post-War American design. The focus of his broad oeuvre was on textile design, and a key source of inspiration for him was his passion for the popular art of South America, Asia and East Europe. The Wooden Dolls, which Girard created for his own home in Santa Fe and made himself, are likewise inspired by his own extensive collection of works of popular art. Half decorative element, half toy, the Wooden Dolls were originally intended only for personal use. Based on originals found in the Girard Estate held by the Vitra Design Museum, the partly joyful, partly grim-looking company of dolls is now coming out as a charming enhancement to any interior.
